Who Qualifies for an EV Ready Plan Rebate in BC?
BC Hydro's rebate program generally applies to apartments, condos, or townhouses in B.C. with five or more units, dedicated resident parking, constructed before September 2022.
Basic EV Ready Plan rebate eligibility in BC
- • Located in British Columbia
- • Multi-unit residential building (apartment, condo, townhouse)
- • 5 or more residential units
- • Dedicated parking for long-term residents
- • Constructed no later than August 31, 2022 (with some exceptions)
Building types that usually qualify
The program is designed for Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs). This includes standard condominium towers, low-rise apartment buildings, and multi-unit townhouse complexes where residents live long-term. Commercial buildings or short-term rentals (like hotels) fall under different programs.
Unit count and parking requirements
The core threshold is five or more units. Additionally, the building must have dedicated parking spaces assigned to residents. The goal of the EV Ready Plan is to show how each of these residential units can eventually have access to at least one EV-ready stall.
Construction date rules and exceptions
Buildings constructed after municipal EV-ready bylaws came into effect, or after the general program cutoff of August 31, 2022, may not qualify. The logic is that newer buildings should already have been built with EV infrastructure in mind. However, exceptions exist depending on your specific municipality's bylaws at the time of construction.
Special cases like bare land strata and shared-ownership models
Some bare land stratas and row-home models can be tricky. They may be eligible if the EV Ready Plan clearly demonstrates that they share electrical infrastructure (like a common electrical room or main service). If every unit is completely independent electrically, they might not fit the MURB program structure.
